Design Interactions 2009 (The Green Book) presents projects by the graduating MA students of Design Interactions at the Royal College of Art. A three-part spread allowed the reader to imagine and mentally play out the scenarios. The theme of the book picks up on the idea of green screen used in film and television with which an isolated object can be projected into any possible environment. The students’ objects were photographed using chroma key. Writer Alex Burrett was commissioned by us to write short stories exploring hypothetical encounters with the objects. With these stories found images from the Internet acted as location shots for the encountered object.

Two typefaces were chosen to bring cultural associations to the content. Drawing inspiration from comparable 1960s publications exploring the subject of technology and society, a widely used Modernist Sans Serif, Monotype Grotesque, was chosen for the main text throughout the book — in one size and with varying weights. A typewriter font ‘Lettera’ set the tone for the futuristic fiction of Alex Burrett — evoking the image of the writer at his desk.
